Printing Brochures For Fun & Profit

How to make a nice brochure from an inkjet printer ... tough ... but here's the best way to approximate it ...
  1. Use Quark or similar program ... draw a line from edge to edge both horizontally and vertically ... and bleed it off all sides.
  2. Print the page and measure where the non-printing edge is ...
  3. Now, use this as a guide for your margins and gutters ...
  4. The MARGINS should be just a tad larger than the non-printing area (for example, if the non-printing area is 3/8", then make margins 4/8" (or 1/2").
  5. The GUTTERS (columns=3) should be DOUBLE the margin because you want the amount of white space to be the same on all sides of each panel.
  6. There will be about a 1/32" shift because of the fold but most people can't see it.
You tend to have large margins with inkjet printers because of the non-printing edges ... but at least this way they'll be even.
